AC Not Cooling — Quick Checks Before You Call
Five safe checks any Spring Hill or Brooksville homeowner can do in under five minutes before calling for AC repair.
1. Thermostat first
Confirm it's set to COOL (not OFF or FAN), and that the setpoint is at least 3°F below the current room reading. Replace the batteries if it's a non-wired model.
2. Filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow and freezes the coil. Pull it. If light won't pass through, replace it. In Hernando County's high pollen and humidity, monthly checks are reasonable.
3. Breakers
Check both the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser breakers. If a breaker trips again immediately when reset, stop — that's a partner-tech call.
4. Ice on the refrigerant lines
If you see ice on the copper lines or evaporator coil, shut the system off at the thermostat and let it thaw for 1–2 hours. Then call — ice usually means low refrigerant or airflow problems.
5. Drain line
Water near the indoor unit usually means a clogged condensate drain — common in Hernando County humidity. Many systems have a float switch that shuts cooling off when the drain backs up.
When to stop and call
Burning smell, electrical buzzing, repeated breaker trips, water flooding the air handler, or no improvement after the checks above. Call our dispatch line and a licensed local partner will be sent.
